Cleft Palates: As An Adult
Cleft Palates and Cleft Lips are openings or split in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth (palate) or both. Cleft palate result when facial structures that are developing in an unborn baby don’t close completely. We usually see advertising from a non-profit organization to donate and support cleft palate treatments for children. However, a cleft palate is not a problem that only children can suffer from; it can also affect adults.
Common Problems Associated With Cleft Palates:
- Speech difficulties: To create sound our body needs a palate. Therefore the development of normal speech can be affected in various ways.
- Dental problems: If the cleft extends through the upper gum, tooth development may be affected.
Case Presentation:
This patient suffered from a cleft palate. Her condition was a little complex since the cleft breaks through the taste towards the nasal cavity.
cleft palate are openings or splits in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth (palate) or both
Any hard material would get stuck on the clefts and might not be retrievable unless cut or it can injure the soft tissue of the palate.
Treatment completed:
To address the problem, we had to create an obturator with a metal framework for rigidity and clasps for retention.
It separated the oral cavity from food going into the clefts/nasal cavity, and it provides that two missing lateral teeth. Considering the challenges of the case, the patient was thrilled.
